RAINFALL:As the eastern boundary is high rainfall (rainforest), the western boundary is savannah grasslands, and the property size is substantial (20km x 25km) to quote an ‘average’ rainfall could be misleading. Indications are that the rainfall varies from 400mm to 1300mm pa with the majority of the property in the 600-700mm range.
SERVICES: Situated 210km north from Charters Towers (3hr drive) and 80km west of Ingham (80min drive) the property is able to access a range of services. Charters Towers is a regional town (population approx 9000 people) with substantial schooling opportunities, shopping, hospitals, theatre etc. For cattleman the weekly liveweight selling centre, Live Export ex Townsville and Townsville meatworks are all major attractions for this location. Ingham is a coastal town of approx 5000 people also with schooling, shopping, hospitals etc. Both Ingham & Charters Towers are equidistant from Townsville, a vibrant growing city of approx 150,000 with a complete range of services, diverse industry, employment, business opportunity, schooling and university education.A special feature of ‘Kilclooney’s’ location is it’s proximity to Mt Fox Primary School just 18km from the station homestead. Children from ‘Kilclooney’ are currently attending Mt Fox School.
COUNTRY: The majority of ‘Kilclooney’ can be described as loamy or granites soils, well grassed lightly timbered rolling low hills, semi-open, with native pastures in healthy condition.
‘Kilclooney’ country types are extremely diverse. Broadly the country ranges from dense rainforest (giant trees, ferns, orchids) to rolling open savannah hills and grassy flats to red soil tablelands and a small area of black basalt soils. The Mt Fox crater, which has been annexed off ‘Kilclooney’, provides evidence of earlier volcanic activity. The property is at the top of the watershed where creeks and rivers run east into the rainforest, Wallaman Falls and Herbert River or west into the famous Burdekin River which rises on the property. An extensive network of creeks such as Seaview Creek, Garrahwah Creek, Stony Creek, West Creek and Four Mile Creek compliment the more substantial systems such as the Douglas River, Michael Creek and provide diverse land types. Aside from the rainforest, the majority of the property is timbered with natural species such as Bloodwood, Ironbark, Moreton Bay, Poplar Gum, Stringy Bark, Blue Gum, Oak and Box with small areas of Yellow-Jack, Wattle and Heartleaf scattered along the edges of the tableland country. Predominant grasses encompass Black Spear, Kangaroo, Forest Mitchell, White Spear, Urachloa and are complimented with a scattering of Seca Stylo in the lighter soil types, particularly the granite country. Lantana bush inhabits the eastern (wetter) side of the property.
WATER:Low maintenance and simplicity is the key to stock waters at ‘Kilclooney’. The property is considered to be well watered by approximately 47 dams and a network of permanent and semi-permanent rivers, creeks and waterholes. In areas where ‘boggy’ dams are a risk the dams are fenced and siphoned into troughs. A floater-roller system with solar panel, poly tank and trough has been installed at one dam.
The homestead complex is located on the banks Michael Creek and has a water supply from a small bore, nearby dam and permanent water in Michael Creek.
STRUCTURES: ‘Kilclooney’ has numerous housing and sheds

All are equipped with branding facilities, loading ramps etc. A plunge dip is in use at the homestead yards and is frequently used when ‘clearing’ into tick free country. The homestead yards are accessible with road trains whilst Jones Yard is assessable with double-deck semi, and West Creek is accessible with body truck & dog trailer
FENCING: ‘Kilclooney’ is fenced with principally 3-barb and steel posts into 12 grazing paddocks,several holding/management paddocks and a large hay paddock. All of the fencing in Quart Pot, Water Crest, Clean Skin, Michael Creek, Black Cow, Top Douglas and the Holding/management paddocks around the cleared country is in new or good Stock-proof condition. Fencing in West Creek, Steer, Triangle and Wallaman 1 & 2 is OK in places and barely stock proof in others. The reason for this situation is that much of this area is managed &/or mustered (under current management) as ‘one’ and so the fencing is obsolete to some extent.
CARRYING CAPACITY:
As a conservative cost-conscious manager the owner estimates ‘Kilclooney’ carrying capacity as 8000 cows plus progeny to weaning. It is estimated that ‘Kilclooney’ is currently running in excess of 10000 cattle (adult + calves, replacement heifers). To assist the sustainability of this stocking rate cattle have supplementary feed (dry lick) available all-year-round, there has been a consistent effort in the dam water programme and regular (3 yearly) patch-burning is standard practice.As evidence of the stocking rate sustainability, the Dept Natural Resources in the Lease Renewal process mid 2007, rated current grass cover and pasture condition as 9/10 (90%).
